thoughts on God

A. W. Tozer once said, "What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us."

I took this quote as a practice exercise. I closed my eyes, cleared my head as best I could and mustered up the first characteristic that came to mind when I thought about the God I'm continually getting to know.

Consistency.

For me, that has always been the most remarkable thing about God's relationship to his children. God is faithful to us when we are not faithful to him. What human is capable of pulling that off? Is that not the whole Christian life in 12 words?

I've become so accustomed to the conditions that others place on my relationship with them. Down here on earth we manipulate; we are prone to anger; we do things out of selfish ambition...even with those we claim to love.
There are no conditions on God's love or presence with us. He doesn't storm out of the room when we yell at him. He doesn't peace out when we're being unruly. He doesn't stop loving us because we ignore him for days, weeks or months at a time.
He'll never turn around and walk away.

According to Tozer, that's supposed to tell me something important about myself. I crave consistency in relationships, perhaps because I've rarely been given that in my past.
I need a loyal, solid, changeless rock.
Really, I need Jesus.
"You stay the same through the ages
Your love never changes
There maybe pain in the night but joy comes in the morning"

What comes into your mind when you think about God?

Beautiful post.

What comes to my mind is forgiveness. I've always been astounded at God's willingness and want to forgive us and take us back.
I think that says a lot about me, too. It's something I need, but it's also something I need to give others.

Hope you're having a great weekend!

the same thing comes to my mind. god's patience and love for me. even when i run in the other direction, he'll chase after me and take me back. he longs to have me, no matter what i've done or not done. that's true love.

Dependence/Dependable

My life can be so inconsistent and confusing that I am endlessly dependent upon God's faithfulness. There are so many beautiful words to describe Christ's presence that mine doesn't really do it justice. Even when I feel faithless and like a doubting Thomas, I'm still crying out to God because I know that He is faithful and dependable and that I am dependent upon Him.

I don't know if any of that makes any sense. I took a Liquigel about an hour ago for my cold, so I'm slightly off.

Great post, Madeline.
